CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

The 2008 Youth in City Government took place on February 5, 12 & 13. Over 100 students from 11 schools in Cincinnati participated in this year's conference. Participants had an opportunity to interact with Hamilton County Commissioner David Pepper, City Council members and staff and were challenged to design a public or charter school. All students wrote an Ordinance based on a city issue of their choice and all had an opportunity to run for the 2008-2009 youth council. In the end 16 students ran for office and had the opportunity to give their campaign speeches in the City Council Chambers at City Hall. The students elected Heather Couch from Aldersgate Christian Academy to serve as Mayor.

YOUTH IN CITY GOVERNMENT
Become part of a fifty year Cincinnati area tradition and have fun learning about your city government by participating in the Youth in City Government Program. This three-day event takes place every February. City Government comes alive for teens from Cincinnati area high schools during this tree day, hands-on program. Students have the opportunity to voice their opinions and share their ideas with city administrators, elected officials, and other Cincinnati students. Students are given the responsibility for the planning, implementation, and leadership of the conference. They may write and vote on ordinances, run for city offices, and speak their minds on current events. Highlights include elections held in the city council chambers, and a luncheon with city officials. This year's conference October 7 & 8, 2008. Teen Presiding Officers lead this conference held in the beautiful mountains of the Blue Ridge Assembly. View CONA handbook.
