The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease.
Research by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%.

About the Program
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program consists of 25 sessions, presented to qualified participants, over the course of a year. In a classroom setting, a nationally certified lifestyle coach will help facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes.

Program Goals
Reduce body weight by 7%
Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week

Who Can Participate?
In order to qualify for the program, you must be at least18 years old, overweight (BMI > 25)* and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes indicated by a confirmatory blood value†, prediabetes determined by clinical diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) during previous pregnancy, or a qualifying risk score.
*Asian individual(s) BMI > 22    †Individuals who have already been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes do not qualify for this program.

An estimated one out of every three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet only 7% of those living with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke; the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program has been show to reduce or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Why wait?  The Y Weight weight loss program is an small group based, 8 week program designed to help individuals lose weight, lower blood pressure, decrease body fat and improve their overall health. Participants meet twice per week with trained health and wellness professionals and are also encouraged to complete physical activity on their own.

Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is the result of these two organizations joining forces to offer a research-based physical activity and well-being program to adult cancer survivors designed to help them reclaim their total health.Through the program, Y staff trained in supportive cancer care help participants to achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where individuals affected by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

The YMCA's Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program is a 4 month evidence based program designed to help persons with hypertension better manage their blood pressure. Participants work with trained Healthy Heart Ambassadors for the duration of the program who help them:
• Measure their blood pressure at least two times per month
• Attend two personalized consultations with a Healthy Heart Ambassador per month
• Attend monthly Nutrition Education Seminars
Goals of the program are to reduce blood pressure, develop skills to manage blood pressure, be able to identify and control triggers that elevate their blood pressure and become more confident in one's ability to adopt healthier eating habits. Blood pressure cuffs are available for those who need them.

ENHANCE FITNESS
Treating Arthritis through Fun, Laughter, and Friends. Enhance Fitness is a proven community based senior fitness and arthritis management program. Its purpose is to help older adults become more active, energized, and empowered for independent living. The program consists of low impact exercise classes that are safe and challenging for older adults of all fitness levels. This program is available at Carl H. Lindner, Melrose, and M.E. Lyons YMCA. Discover Health is a mobile health program that travels throughout the Greater Cincinnati area to teach interactive health programs to youth. These programs help emphasize the importance of health in everyday life and how it is vital to success inside and outside of school.
